Revitalising a National Landmark through Light

The restoration of the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Felim in Cavan, Ireland, aimed to preserve its architectural heritage while modernising outdated systems. Built in 1942, the neo-classical cathedral had poor interior lighting and increasing energy costs. The goal was to enhance visual comfort, safety, and efficiency—both inside and out—without compromising the structure’s historic integrity. The project also focused on reducing energy consumption and maintenance through cutting-edge lighting solutions.

Dynamic Lighting Elevates Architecture and Atmosphere

The lighting design, developed by Zumtobel Group and Callaghan Electrical Contractors, blends advanced LED technology with heritage sensitivity. Inside, subtle lighting upgrades enhance visibility while respecting original design features. Outside, Thorn’s Contrast RGBW floodlights dramatically illuminate the façade and 68-metre spire, offering programmable lighting scenes for religious and cultural events. The integration of DMX controls and RAL-customised Avenue D2 fittings brings aesthetic consistency and functionality to the site’s surroundings, including car parks and entrances.
A monochromatic green lighting scenario transforms the church’s appearance, showcasing the flexibility of the lighting solution and emphasizing the building’s presence in the urban landscape after dark.
