Lighting Excellence at 2 Stockport Exchange: Smart, Sustainable and Stylish

As part of Stockport's ambitious town centre regeneration, 2 Stockport Exchange is a landmark six-storey Grade A office development offering over 61,000 sq. ft. of premium workspace. The project demanded a high-performance lighting solution that would meet rigorous energy, safety and aesthetic standards—while supporting the building's BREEAM Excellent rating. Thorn Lighting was selected to deliver a modern, low-maintenance and energy-efficient lighting scheme aligned with the project's sustainability goals and user comfort requirements.

Energy-Efficient Office Lighting That Meets LG7 Standards

Thorn’s lighting design team collaborated closely with KNG Building Services to develop a tailored solution that meets the LG7 standard for office lighting and achieves an A-rated energy performance. The office spaces are illuminated using Beta 2 LED square recessed panels, designed for optimal visual comfort with a Unified Glare Rating (UGR) of less than 19 and luminance under 3,000 cd/m² at 65 degrees. The luminaires offer a high efficacy of over 100 lm/W, significantly reducing energy consumption while delivering bright, uniform illumination across expansive open-plan floors.

Smart Emergency and Stairwell Lighting with Long-Term Savings

To ensure safety and compliance across all building zones, Katona E3D luminaires were installed in stairwells, offering smooth, dirt-resistant surfaces and integrated Lithium-Ion battery-backed emergency functionality. For discreet emergency coverage, Voyager Fit self-contained recessed luminaires were used throughout, featuring interchangeable lenses for anti-panic, escape route and spotlight configurations. Requiring only 80 mm ceiling voids, Voyager Fit is ideal for low-profile installations while providing advanced emergency lighting performance.
